What are Executive Functions?

• EF is an “umbrella term” used to describe all the  cognitive (brain) processes needed to keep us focused to move towards goals. We all use EF skills each day and they are essential for success in school, work and life.

  • • Focus/Attention

    • Time management

    • Organizing/Planning/Prioritizing

    • Working Memory

    • Task Initiation (getting started on tasks)

    • Flexible thinking

    • Task monitoring (“How am I doing on this task? Am I catching my mistakes?”)

    • Task Completion (making sure I get my stuff done)

    • Self-monitoring (“Can I notice how I am coming across to others?”)

    • Self-control (knowing how and when I need to “reign it in”)

    • Emotional Control (managing emotions effectively)

    • Using Feedback to learn from mistakes

  • • Forgetfulness or losing things

    • Getting tasks started (initiation) and/or getting tasks completed (task completion)

    • A scattered and/or overwhelmed approach to tasks

    • Difficulty with time management/procrastination

    • Difficulty reading social cues or tracking with conversations

    • Trouble remembering instructions or multiple step directions

    • Lacking self-control/managing behaviors

    • Unsure how to prioritize tasks, then getting overwhelmed

Parent Coaching

Part of effective work with children/teens is collaborating with their parents. One such approach, Parent coaching, is an evidenced based intervention for helping students with executive functioning challenges. Our approach to parent coaching provides the following:

*Empowering parents/caregivers with effective tools to support their student's confidence and competence (academically, socially, emotionally)

*Teaching parents ways to foster increased independence, self-regulation and effective problem solving in their student

*Collaborating with the EF clinician to ensure the skills the student learns in session will translate into real-life situations at home and school

Cogmed Working Memory Training

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a scientifically-based, computerized program designed to improve working memory, a critical cognitive skill that enables individuals to hold and manipulate information in their minds. Through a series of engaging, game-like exercises tailored to each individual's needs, Cogmed training targets the development of working memory capacity, attention, and processing speed. By strengthening these foundational cognitive abilities, individuals can experience improvements in attention, organization, planning, and academic or professional performance, ultimately leading to enhanced overall cognitive function and daily functioning.
